HEADACHE DISORDERS
Headache is the most common pain problem that affects close to 50% of the population. Headaches can be classified into two broad categories; primary headaches and secondary headaches. Proper diagnosis and timely treatment can minimize your pain and suffering.
Difference between primary and secondary headaches
1. Primary Headache Disorder:
When the headache does not stem from another disease or abnormality and the headache itself is the main problem, then it is called the primary headache. Therefore, a primary headache is not a symptom of an underlying disease and may not have a clear-cut apparent reason.
Dr. Chawla is a dentist with advanced training in treating craniofacial pain, including primary headaches along with neuralgias and neuropathies affecting the orofacial region. The most common types of primary headaches are migraine headache, tension type headache and cluster headache. Primary headaches are not life threatening conditions but in some cases the pain can be very detrimental and severe enough to need urgent care.
2. Secondary Headache Disorder:
These arise from a different underlying problem that causes the headache. For example, a sinus infection can cause a sinus headache or and injury can cause a trauma induced headache. Secondary headaches can also arise from a generalized disease condition. A tumor or another abnormality or even an infection in the brain or the spinal chord could also result in a headache. These headaches usually go away when the underlying cause is treated or brought under control.
In some people, these headaches could be a warning sign of a very serious underlying condition especially if the headache comes on suddenly in a person who was previously headache free for the most part. If you think that your headache may be stemming from a different underlying condition, you need to consult your regular medical doctor or a neurologist as they will have more expertise in the treatment of secondary headaches. In some cases, a visit to the emergency room or immediate hospitalization may be needed if the pain is very excruciating and is accompanied by loss of function.
Common Primary Headache Conditions
Primary headaches are caused by the over activation of pain sensitive structures in the head. This over activity can stem from the nerves and/or blood vessels surrounding the skull or from the muscles of the head and neck region. It can also be due to changes in the chemical activity in the brain or combination of the above factors. Some people may have certain genetic factors that make them more prone to developing such headaches. Following are the most common types of primary headaches.
